Each signed entry runs one to five pages and includes a bibliography, references, and photos and black-and-white illustrations; the writing is appropriate for advanced high school and college-age students. M.K. Sundaresan's comparable Handbook of Particle Physics has fewer illustrations and a smaller format, and while many of the same entries are included, the Rigden volume presents its topics more clearly and categorizes them in more detail. Nevertheless, this work is not an adequate substitute for the full physics set owing to its narrow focus on elementary particle physics.
