More John Honigmann was an anthropologist of rare energy and talent. In addition to writing numerous books and dozens of articles, he was the first anthropologist to work among the three northern culture areas of Canada -- the Western Subarctic, Eastern Subarctic and the Arctic. This is a photographic record of this extraordinary anthropological journey. From the hundreds of photographs housed at The National Anthropological Archives at The Smithsonian Institute, and from the private collection of Dr Honigmann's children, Bryan Cummins has complied a written and photographic account of Honigmann's ethnographic work from the 1940s to the 1960s. The result is a stunning ethnohistorical account of Canada's First Nations in the mid-20th century. In addition to the photographs, Cummins provides an overview of northern First Nations, a history of Canadian anthropology and the sub-discipline of ethnographic photography, and a biography of Dr Honigmann, the man who took these superb photographs.
