Bristol M.1 (Windsock Datafile 52) By J.M. Bruce

The history of the De Havilland DH5 (see WINDSOCK DATAFILE No.50) highlights one eminent British aeroplane designer's aim to develop a high performance single-seat fighter that provided the best possible view for its pilot. Frank Barnwell's solution to the same problem was his Bristol Monoplane but there was a difference; the pert M.l was undoubtedly far superior to the DH5 yet it was never to enjoy full-scale production and its operational fighting service was limited to a handful of machines serving in the Middle East theatre. As Jack Bruce relates in this long overdue in-depth study of the type the Bristol Monoplane deserved far better.
