More

This book provides a broad survey of the nature writing produced by British labouring-class writers during the long Eighteenth century. It taps into growing awareness of Eighteenth and Nineteenth century labouring-class poets and their work. It fits with growing interest in literature and nature, expanding the boundaries of environmental literary criticism (eco-crit). It uses thematic case studies to explore particular writers and particular genres of nature writing. It argues that the works of these labouring-class poets offers important insights into the dynamics of class relations in the period, theories of the human place in nature, questions of access to forms of literary and the writing of literary history. It includes discussion of poets including John Clare, Robert Bloomfield, Thomas Chatterton and William Falconer.BRIDGET KEEGAN is Professor of English at Creighton University, USA. She is the editor of volume two of "Eighteenth-Century Labouring-Class Poets" and (with James C. McKusick) of "Literature and Nature". With Simon White and John Goodridge, she co-edited "Robert Bloomfield: Lyric, Class and the Romantic Canon". She is the author of numerous articles and chapters on labouring-class writers. This study shows how poets worked within and against the available forms of nature writing to challenge their place within physical, political, and cultural landscapes. Looking at the treatment of different ecosystems, it argues that writing about the environment allowed labouring-class poets to explore important social and aesthetic questions.
