More Brian Eno & Jah Wobble - Spinner. This is an unusual collaboration between Eno and Wobble (ex-Public Image Ltd), and not a particularly cohesive one. Basically, Eno supplied Wobble with some ambient tracks from a discarded nineties soundtrack project (Derek Jarman's Glitterbug), and Wobble stretched the landscapes with his usual blend of dubby bass and rhythms. The overall sound is slow and warmly atmospheric, peridiocally increasing in velocity, although in places it seems too apparent where each individual’s contributions lie – so the mixing process appears a little obvious. Still, as you would expect, some gratifying moments evolve from these two pioneering musicians. Like Organza is the first to impress, with its involving, intermittent chimes and melodic, high pitch synth tones. Each track flows into another on Spinner, and the following Steam is another interesting piece, with deep, moving strings burrowing a passage beneath psychedelic synth swirls and some unfashionable prog rock backing, This is quite similar to Wobble’s own lengthy solo instrumental work. The uptempo Unusual Balance breaks the mould, tackling edgy guitar scrawls amidst jangling percussion and analogue synth whirls with seamless jazz overtones, and the album part-closes with the dubby, Eastern mysticism of Left Where It Fell. I say part-closes because there is an aditional, unnamed bonus ambient track wedged on the end, unmistakenly Eno - featuring tinkling piano roaming over alien landscapes – it seems more than literally cut off from the rest of the album, but is good nevertheless. All in all, a rather disjointed collaboration – not amongst either artists best works – but still contains a number of memorable and satisfying pieces. 01. Where We Lived 02:59 02.
