Braille has come a long way from his humble beginnings as a surprisingly developed 17 year old wordsmith searching for his signature sound on his debut “Lifefirst: Half the Battle”. A few years after his debut he had found himself behind on his sophomore album, and magnum opus “Shades of Gray”. He then went on to drop two very solid follow-ups: 2006’s deeply personal “Box of Rhymes,” and 2008’s sonically eclectic “The IV Edition.” The IV edition is what brings us to his latest drop “Cloud Nineteen”. On “The IV Edition” Braille collaborated with Symbolic One (of The Strange Fruit Project) on what may be his most deeply personal and revered song, “Blessed Man”. This collaboration sparked the flame that would become “Cloud Nineteen”.

The Achilles’ heel of Braille’s post-Shades albums has more often than not been the production. Braille often gets head nodding heat rocks from heavy hitters like Tony Stone, Kno, Ohmega Watts, Celph Titled, Illmind, J-Zone, 9th Wonder, Oh No, M-Phases, 88 Keys, Dj Spinna,& K-Murdock. However, the odd nondescript and underwhelming soundscape or two will find its way into his releases. Another issue with his post Shades albums production has been their sonic dissonance. There is nowhere this is more apparent than on “The IV Edition”, where Braille used a different producer for each of the 17 tracks. While the lion’s share of the joints on that album were excellently executed, they failed to connect and flow from one to the other as an album properly should. “Cloud Nineteen” eliminates this issue off the bat by having Symbolic One serve as the sole sound provider, and he doesn’t disappoint. S1 drops some amazing, soulful and emotive beats that perfectly and consistently set the stage for Braille.

Album highlight “Broken Heart” has Myth and Myone (of Strange Fruit Project) sharing mic duties with Braille, a soulful backdrop of driving drums and organs that take you to church, courtesy of S1. Braille and Strange Fruit Project wax poetic and philosophical about the afterlife and the dead and gone. Unlike most songs in this vein, the emcees deliver the emotionally potency that the topic warrants while maintaining a sense of joy. And of course, this is all while the silky smooth vocals of Thesis and Ragen Fykes take it over the top. The album takes a minor detour for the worse in the middle. On “Heart of GOD” Braille attempts to deal with the issues of organized religion, more specifically the modern church. He normally excels at songs of this nature with this theme. However, he doesn’t quite bring the energy needed to stand out from S1′s haunting and atmospheric sound stage. The next track “Found Her” is an ode to women, specifically Braille’s wife and how they came to be. The cheesy vocal sample and sleepy synths cause this track to fall short of its big sister song “Blessed Man.” All things considered this was a very solid album with a few minor missteps here and there. Overall, this is a nice, consistent release; the pairing of S1’s soulful beats and Braille’s insightful and relatable lyrical styling’s makes for a very enjoyable listen. This is an album definitely worth picking up.
