Conductor Bobby McFerrin and pianist Chick Corea create new interpretations of Mozart Piano Concertos in Sony Classical's The Mozart Sessions with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. The release includes improvisations by McFerrin and Corea in the Mozart Style.

Like other pianists of his time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart prided himself on his ability to improvise at the keyboard, both in solo works and concertos. That long-abandoned practice is one of the elements of Mozartean style that conductor Bobby McFerrin and pianist Chick Corea explore in The Mozart Sessions, their new Sony Classical recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos No.20 in D minor, K.466, and No.23 in A Major, K.488, performed with The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. The Mozart Sessions was released in October, 1996.

Not only does Corea play his own cadenzas in the concertos, he and McFerrin link their individual improvisations to lead the listener directly into each of the concertos. What makes these improvisations so unusual is the fact that both McFerrin, a bestselling pop vocalist, and Corea, a jazz pianist, bring their own distinctive creative styles to bear on Mozart's music. Improvisation was considered an essential talent for a concert pianist in the late 18th century. Both Mozart and Beethoven dazzled audiences with their skill at improvisation. When he was still a performing pianist, Beethoven frequently played Mozart's D minor concerto -- one of the few Mozart works he championed -- adding his own cadenzas, which have become standard since Mozart's own cadenzas for this concerto were never notated.

With their inimitable Mozart improvisations drawing the audience into a performance of the same Mozart concerto, McFerrin and Corea, joined by the Orchestra of St. Luke's, were featured in a PBS "Great Performances" concert special entitled "Classic Innovations". McFerrin performed, conducted and served as host of the program, which also featured cellist Yo-Yo Ma, jazz pianist Marcus Roberts, violinist Mark O'Connor and double bassist Edgar Meyer.

Bobby McFerrin is a ten-time Grammy winner as singer, composer, arranger and producer who is best known as a creative songwriter-vocalist. His chart-topping hit song "Don't Worry Be Happy" won him three Grammys in 1988, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. His diverse musical interests have led him to devote more of his time to classical music as a conductor of the most of the world's major orchestras, including return engagements with the London Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, National Symphony and Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras. His 1992 Sony Classical recording Hush (SK 48177), a collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, was recently certified a gold record. McFerrin holds the Creative Chair position in the artistic leadership of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In 1995, Sony Classical released the highly acclaimed Paper Music (SK 64600), which represents McFerrin's recording debut as a conductor.

One of the most enduring and creative keyboard artists in American jazz and an eight-time Grammy Award winner, the Massachusetts-born Corea grew up in a musical home, where both jazz and classical music were heard and played, and he began studying the piano at the age of four. He established himself in the 1960s as a pianist with Latin-influenced jazz artists such as Willie Bobo, Cal Tjader, Herbie Mann and Mongo Santamaria. Corea later played electric piano with Miles Davis' band, performing on the ground breaking fusion recordings Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way. After he founded Return to Forever in 1971, he became one of the most influential figures in the jazz fusion movement of the 1970s. But Corea's restless creativity later took him in different directions -- solo piano recordings, classical music, different combinations of electronic and acoustic ensembles -- and his latest endeavor, his own label called Stretch Records, has become a vehicle for his expanding musical interests.
