Mercedes Benz - Taj Mahal D/L Links: Release Notes: Just as she herself was influenced by the legacy of such Blues Singers as Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton, Janis Joplin's music continues to reach out to new generations of Rock and Blues fans. On this heartfelt tribute set, Joplin contemporaries Tracy Nelson and Taj Mahal, young blood Lou Ann Barton, and R&B originals Etta James, Otis Clay and Lonnie Brooks (plus many other artists), combine to deliver a gritty, impassioned testament to one of the most powerful blues voices to come out in the 1960s West Coast Rock scene. Like much of Amerika, Port Arthur struggled hard to gain identity around the turn of the century, several attempts to settle around what was to become Janis Joplin's Hometown had failed. Suddenly in 1901, the oil gusher spindletop blew a few miles down from Port Arthur, it was a booming burst of glory, the deepwater port became a major outlet for oil refining and ship building. The rushing spirit of spindletop runs through Joplin's life. In 1997 Janis Joplin is dead as long as she was alive, 27 years (born Jan., 19 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas - died in Oct., 4 1970 in Hollywood, California). Her career was a short tumultuous shot. Joplin recorded just 3 albums, but her imprint on American Blues, Soul and Rockmusic will be felt long after oil wells run dry and small towns grow big. Joplin's father was assistant superintendent of the Texaco Canning Company and her mother was registrar of a business college and was active in church work around Port Arthur. Joplin grew up alienated in rugged Port Arthur and couldn't wait to leave home yet. She died waiting for hometown approval. In her 1970 song "Ego Blues" Joplin wrote "I just had to get out of Texas, Babe/Lord it was bringin' me down/I been all around the world, but Port Arthur is the worst place I ever found". (Ego Blues is on the 1972 release "Joplin In Concert"/Columbia). At the same time Joplin was writing "Ego Blues" she was excited about her 10-year-Jefferson-Highschool-Reunion in August 1970 in Port Arthur. The reunion was held in the "Petroleum Room" (naturally) of the Goodhue Hotel in Downtown Port Arthur. Joplin arrived wearing a see-through blouse, purple feathers in her hair and trademark rose-coloured sunglasses. She had a Heroin habit and was drinking heavily. Her live concerts were often punctuated by healthy swigs from a bottle of Southern Comfort. Two month later, Joplin accidentally spiked out in the Landmark Hotel in Hollywood,CA. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Thomas Noguchi, the same man who made Marylin Monroe's autopsy 8 years earlier. Joplin's body was cremated and scattered at sea. Ironically, two month before her death Joplin helped purchase a tombstone for Blues Singer Bessie Smith who bled to death in 1937 after a car accident. You can hear her moody paradox play out in Joplin's songs. Her tonal vulnerability counterpointed randy phrasing and the showgirl swagger of beads, bells and fringe. "You never quite know where's she goin' to go", says Ira Antelis, the producer of Songs Of Janis Joplin, Blues Down Deep. "In that way, it's captivating. In her heart she was a Blues Singer. Blues and Soul were the touchstones of Songs Of Janis Joplin, Blues Down Deep. Joplin began her career by emulating Bessie Smith, singing in big open notes, shaped by simple phrasing, but after watching soul shaker Otis Redding perform at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Joplin pursued a more rythmic direction and pushed her three octave range through the envelope. This became her trademark in music and in life. In the passionate biography, "Love, Janis" (Villard Books) sister Laura Joplin recalled Janis reciting her credo: "I never hold back. I'm always on the outer edge of probability". PLUS: Janis - Beth Ditto (BBC Radio 2 Documentary) Gossip front woman Beth Ditto tells the life story of one of her biggest heroes, Janis Joplin, who would have been 65 on the day the programme is broadcast (19 January,2008). Ardent fan and singer, Beth Ditto tells the story of Janis Joplin’s short but celebrated life. On 19th January 2008, Janis Joplin would have been 65. Instead, an early death from a drugs overdose, means the world is left with the legacy of Joplin's 27-year-old singing voice forever. With the help of contributors Robin Gibb, Bonnie Tyler and both of Janis' siblings, Beth reveals the real Janis - where she came from and what turned her into the "wild woman of rock’n’roll" who wowed the crowds at Monterey and Woodstock. 60 min. 64 kbps.
