More Block Error-Correcting Codes: A Computational Primer (Universitext) by: Sebastià Xambó-Descamps This book presents a one-semester course in coding theory, meant for third- or fourth-year university students. Prerequisites are some knowledge of linear algebra, algebraic structures like groups, rings and fields, and basic facts of probability theory. There are four chapters. In the first chapter the basic concepts of block error-correcting codes are introduced, including parameter bounds. A special section is devoted to Hadamard codes, which are in general nonlinear. In chapter two the standard theory about finite fields is developed: existence and construction of finite fields, and the notion of primitive elements. Chapters three and four are devoted to special codes: cyclic codes and alternant codes, respectively. Characteristics of these codes are determined, and some decoding algorithms are described extensively. Each chapter has a variety of exercises and problems, with the exercises inserted in the text at various places and the problems grouped at the end of each section. In the book no answers or solutions are given. This book has the special feature that at \url{http://www.wiris.com/cc} a PDF file of the book is available. It is announced that one can only download a non-printable version. The file is downloaded. If you click on any chapter in the book an interactive system called WIRIS/cc is activated which enables you to create your own examples, or to play with existing ones. This system is very easy to handle, and at the end of the book in an Appendix a short introduction is given.
