The Brazilian diva Bidu Sayão (1902-1999) was a light soprano, with a very pure voice (albeit a bit "small"), exquisite musicality and remarquable agility in coloratura. She has started her international carrer about 1930 in Italy, but she was adopted by the Metropolitan opera as soon as she debuted in NY, in 1936. For the following 15 years she was one of the brightest stars there, especially in the french repertoire and some coloratura parts. It is true that her voice suits perfectly the 19th century french operas and you will have the opportunity of checking her in Faust, Romeo and Manon, even in Ravel's "Enfant et les sortileges". Bidu Sayão, as an internationaly acclaimed brazilian artist met, inevitably, Villa-Lobos and they recorded together some of his works. The most celebrated example of their collaboration is the 1945 recording of the Aria-Cantilena from Bachiana Brasileira No 5. One does not know what to admire most in this recording, the timbre, the technique or the emotion... A classic! Also included, some french melodies and a delectable series of brazilian folksongs, as arranged by Ernani Braga.
