IMHO, the gem in here is the bass-less trio sessions (tracks 1-8). It's unbelieavable that a Benny Carter - Teddy Wilson - Jo Jones trio session remained unissued for almost 40 years! The session had even taken a number for issue (Benny Carter, Norgran MGN 1025), however that wasn't the case. The trio sounds very relaxed and cool, as they are playing in your room, just for them and you. Personal favourite: "June in January"

Then, we have a re-issue of "Moonglow: Love Songs By Benny Carter And His Orchestra" (tracks 9-16). These quartet numbers have a somewhat mainstream feel, centering on lush ballads that parade Carter's sumptuous, romantic alto tone. In addition, a tracks that was left album from the original LP ("This Can't Be Love") is included here.

Three unissued tracks round up this excellent CD. These quintet tracks (17-19) feature a fuller but equally mellow sound, with help from pianist Oscar Peterson and the smoothly swinging guitar of Herb Ellis.
