More Bell UH-1D Luftwaffe (F-40 Flugzeuge Der Bundeswehr 28) By Siegfried Wache Der leichte Bell UH-1D „Iroquois" Transporthubschrauber, besser bekannt unter seinem Spitznamen „Huey", ist eine Variante der berühmten UH-1 Produktionslinie, die man anhand der bisher erreichten Produktionszahlen getrost als den VW der Lüfte bezeichnen kann. Die Bell Aircraft Corporation war 1935 vom visionären Luftfahrtpionier Larry Bell in Buffalo N.Y. gegründet worden. Zunächst lagen die Aktivitäten der Firma ganz auf dem Gebiet des Flächenflugzeugbaus. In dieser Zeit wurden so bekannte Serien-und Versuchsflugzeuge wie der Jäger P-39 Airacobra, der erste amerikanische Jet P-59 Airacomet und das Überschall-versuchsflugzeug Bell X-1, welches als erstes Luftfahrzeug geplant die Schallmauer durchbrach, entwickelt und im Fall des Jägers P-39 auch in großen Stückzahlen in Serie gebaut. 1938 gehörte Larry Bell zu einer Gruppe von amerikanischen Industriellen, die das damalige Deutsche Reich bereisten, um das industrielle Potential dieses Landes zu studieren. Als Luftfahrtfachmann mit einem Blick für zukunftsweisende Entwicklungen war Larry Bell besonders vom Focke-Achgelis Fw-61 Hubschrauber fasziniert . In Deutschland realisierte man zum damaligen Zeitpunkt kaum die Möglichkeiten, die dieses revolutionäre Fluggerät bot und den Entwicklungsvorsprung, den man auch auf diesem Gebiet vor den Ausland hatte.
