Becoming a Writer

More Here's a gift for young writers. This is The Book for beginning writers. It is the first book that a beginning writer should read. Both Stephen King and Ray Bradbury (with countless others) begin their own writing books and lectures early on advising young writers to read this book before they read anything else. It is not an inspirational book. It is not a DIY book. It is not a technical how-to book. It is not mystical. It isn't just recommended, it's practically required. It will save you years of strain and struggle--and take it from somebody who didn't make an honest try the first time he read it, and had to struggle and strain for an unacceptable number of years in consequence. Brande lays out the essential disciplines and habits a writer has. Not only that, but she spells out the easiest way that anyone can learn to develop them. When you meet a writer who can sit and type for hours a day, who seems to be endlessly creative and have no limit of energy and ideas, you can lay down money that he or she has a heavily marked copy of this book lying around somewhere. I want to emphasize that this is book is neither grueling nor sentimental. If you genuinely want to write, you will surprise yourself with how easy it is to develop these habits, and how quickly your creativity and productivity explode. This is not a prescription that you are forcing upon yourself. If you are ready to write, the exercises will come with very little force, and you will surprise yourself again and again at how little force you have to use. As Brande herself says, if for some reason you absolutely cannot do these exercises, it is because you are sabotaging yourself because you're not currently ready. I recommend you either lay the book aside and come back later, or read her follow-up book Wake Up and Live!, which is included. You can easily work through most of the program in anywhere from three weeks to two months. Again, if you can't get anywhere, lay it aside for a while, read Wake up and Live, and try again later. A Recommended Approach : 1. Read through the entire book once and start the beginning exercises. 2. As you continue doing the exercises, read through a second time, and highlight passages you want to remember. 3. As you come to the end of the exercises, look back over the highlighted bits to remind yourself of the things you found important. Additionl Book and the follow-up Wake Up and Live! As many of the books in Brande's Bibliography are now in the public domain, I have included them in an additional folder. See the torrent list. Much has changed since this book was published in 1934. I have taken the liberty of appending a new Bibliography for modern readers, along with an original essay titled Reading and Writing in the New Millennium. Download Links -
