More

The blacksmith plays a key role in making and repairing tools and other metal items which are needed in rural areas.

This book explains basic blacksmithing techniques and gives step-by-slep instructions on how to make a range of tools and products. By working through the book in the order in which it is written, you can develop your skills while at the same lime building up a set of tools. Each stage is illustrated by a drawing. There is also a section covering workshop equipment, including designs for bellows, hearths and anvils.

It is assumed that you will leam and practise blacksmithing techniques at an existing forge before committing yourself to setting up a workshop of your own.

The tools in this book are not intended to copy those made in factories, but they work well, they cost little and they can all be maintained in the rural forge.

Throughout the book the authors have tried to avoid using fixed dimensions. The exact size and shape of a piece of metal may be important to an engineer making a part for a machine, but for the blacksmith these will vary according to the wishes of the customer and the metal in the scrap pile. The methods described are not the only ones that may be appropriate, but they have been chosen because they are accessible to most people.

Starting with only an anvil, a pair of bellows and a few basic tools, you can make almost all the tools you need to set up your own forge, as well as producing useful implements such a knives, sickles and axes.

Tools and equipment, raw materials and their properties, and basic techniques including fire management and tempering are described to provide a sound basis for the illustrated, step-by-step instructions which follow. Where possible, more than one method of making an item is shown and suitable scrap metal sources are listed. There is also a section on making the metal parts of carpentry tools.

All the designs are based on those used by rural blacksmiths; the book builds on traditional techniques and equipment to enable smiths to develop new skills using the resources available. These techniques will be invaluable to blacksmiths who wish to broaden their range, and also beginners who wish to learn basic blacksmithing.

A good initiation to metalworking but definitively not a book for the experimented blacksmith.

Aims to provide resource material for practising blacksmiths and teachers.
