Committee on Remediation of Buried and Tank Wastes, National Research Council, "Barrier Technologies for Environmental Management: Summary of a Workshop"

To control the migration of radioactive and hazardous wastes currently contained underground, barriers made of natural materials and man-made substances are constructed atop, and possibly around, the contaminated area. Barrier Technologies for Environmental Management provides a brief summary of the key issues that arose during the Workshop on Barriers for Long-Term Isolation.

Recurring themes from the sessions include the importance of quality control during installation, followed by periodic inspection, maintenance, and monitoring, and documentation of installation and performance data. Barrier Technologies for Environmental Management includes papers by the workshop presenters.

FROM THE INTRODUCTION

"The Committee on Remediation of Buried Tank Wastes (the "committee") was appointed by the National Research Council and has the general task of addressing critical generic and site-specific issues relevant to remediation of the environmental contamination from buried and tank-contained defense radioactive and mixed waste . . . The committee and representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Restoration agreed that a workshop on containment barriers would be useful. Participants in such a workshop would include government researchers and contractors, as well as barrier designers and builders from the private sector.

The workshop program was designed to cover a wide range of barrier approaches using varius materials, both natural and man-made, and different installation techniques."
