In this latest Richard Bolitho novel, Alexander Kent returns to the early days of the Bolitho saga. The year is 1774: Bolitho stands on the brink of manhood and must pass his examination before the Navy Board to begin his true career as a King's Officer. One of the three sitting captains holds a grudge against Bolitho's father but even that cannot deny Richard a passing recommendation. Soon, Bolitho and his friend, Martyn Dancer, set sail to deliver the new topsail schooner, Hotspur, to the Channel Islands.

It should be an easy sail, but nothing is routine about this trip, as Bolitho soon finds himself forced to confront an abusive lieutenant and test his mettle against vicious smugglers. And then he is sent on a perilous mission to cut out the smuggler's brig with only a handful of sailors to back him up.
