Bien que la date de composition des Six suites anglaises soit floue, les musicologues estiment que Bach en débuta la composition vers 1715. Il était alors à Weimar et il acheva le cycle sept ou huit ans plus tard. La difficulté de l’interprétation de ce cycle réside dans l’aspect disparate des mouvements qui composent les Suites. Ce sont des danses, allemandes, courantes, sarabandes, bourrées, gigues, gavottes, menuets… précédées d’un prélude. Plus étonnant encore, on ne sait pourquoi Bach a souhaité ajouter le terme anglaises. Dans le cas des Suites françaises, les éléments musicaux nationaux sont patents. Ici, nulle trace d’une écriture d’Outre-Manche ! Christophe Rousset interprète ce répertoire au clavecin depuis des années. Son jeu ne possède aucune raideur et il se libère de la rigueur contrapuntique des Suites. Le sentiment de liberté raffinée qu’il exprime sert la musicalité de ces pages mais également leur paradoxe, celui d’une écriture savante dont la source puise au fond des rythmes populaires ! --Étienne Bertoli Although the date of composition of the Six English continuations is fuzzy, the musicologists estimate that Bach began the composition from it about 1715. The difficulty of the interpretation of this cycle lies in the disparate aspect of the movements which compose the Continuations. They are dances, allemandes, current, sarabands, faggots, gigues, gavottes, minuets… preceded by a prelude. More astonishing still, it is not known why Bach wished to add the term English. In the case of the French Continuations, the national musical elements are obvious. Here, null trace of a writing of On the other side of the channel! Christophe Rousset interprets this repertory with the harpsichord since years. Its play does not have any stiffness and it is released from the contrapuntic rigour of the Continuations. The feeling of refined freedom that it expresses serves the musical quality of these pages but also their paradox, that of an erudite writing whose source draws at the bottom of the popular rates/rhythms!
