More B-17 (Waffen-Arsenal 34) By Steve Birdsall, Horst Scheibert Ein Flugzeug wie die B-l 7 wird es niemals wieder geben. Die Zeiten, das Kriegsbild und die Menschen haben sich geändert. Als die US-Streitkräfte ihre Forderungen für einen Bomber im Jahre 1934 stellten, der fähig sein sollte, 450 km/h in einer Diensthöhe von 7.500 m für eine Einsatzdauer bis zu zehn Stunden zu fliegen, waren die Boeing-Flugzeugwerke bereit, diese Herausforderung anzunehmen. Ihr schon bestehendes sehr erfolgreiches Modell 247 erbrachte Erkenntnisse hierfür. Da die Firma ebenfalls bereits an der riesigen XB-15, dem größten Flugzeug, das 1937 startete, arbeitete, ergaben sich auch Erfahrungen für diesen Auftrag. Während die meisten Hersteller zweimotorige Konstruktionen herausbrachten, begann ein Team unter Edward C. Wells in Seattle mit der Arbeit am Modell 299 - der späteren B-l 7. Die Herstellung begann am 16. August 1934. Stark angelehnt an die XB-15 und das Modell 247 baute Boeing ein hervorragendes Flugzeug, gänzlich frei von den Unbeholfenheiten, die so viele Bomber der 30er Jahre charakterisierten. Die erste "Fliegende Festung" hatte acht Besatzungsmitglieder, wurde mit vier Motoren von jeweils 750 PS angetrieben und wog 19,5 Tonnen. Sie war 20,94 m lang mit einer Flügelbreite von knapp 32 m und besaß vier MG-Stände mit einer Vorkehrung in der Flugzeugnase, um dort ein fünftes MG (Kaliber 7,62 mm) aufzunehmen. Der erste Testflug fand am 28. Juli 1935 statt, als der Testpilot Les Tower das Modell 299 erstmals in die Luft brachte. Nach dem 90-Minuten-Flug waren die Ängste geschwunden und die große Arbeitsanstrengungen gerechtfertigt. Am 20. August wurde das Flugzeug zum Wright-Flugplatz zur Erprobung durch das Air Corps verlegt. Die "Festung" meisterte dort jede Schwierigkeit. Plötzlich, am 30. Oktober, kam das große silberne Flugzeug während eines Starts in eine überzogene Fluglage und schlug empfindlich auf dem Boden auf. Während es Feuer fing konnten fünf Besatzungsmitglieder geborgen werden.
