“Oceans Of Time“ was the last album with Jorg Michael behind the drumkit and the first one with voice wonder Johnny Gioeli on the micro. Jeff Scott Soto has said goodbye to AXEL RUDI PELL with “Magic” and cleared the way for a progress of the band. Not that Soto would have been bad, far from it, but Johnny Gioeli was the enhancement and another future success factor for ARP.

Musically “Oceans Of Time“ offers mainly what you're used to from AXEL RUDI PELL. Solid Melodic Metal arranged on a few fast songs like “Pay The Prices“ or “Living On The Wildside“, midtempo bangers like the phenomenal “Carousel“, “Ride The Rainbow“ or “Holy Creatures“, epic stuff like the title track, “The Gates Of The Seven Seals“ and slightly balladesque songs like “Ashes From The Oath“. In addition there is also the obligatory intro and the instrumental “Prelude To The Moon“ in which Axel and Ferdy Doernberg duel each other. Altogether the disk doesn't sound as perfected as the ingenious successor “The Masquerade Ball“ but it already points out the way to following feats. Furthermore one of the great highlights of the ARP discography is found on “Oceans Of Time”, “Carousel“. Actually the song contains everything that constitutes AXEL RUDI PELL. Handy riffing, strong melodies and, of course, a cool guitar solo which gives you a goose bumps. The other pieces are at a high level, too, so that no real blackout can be spotted, however, the long songs like “The Gates Of The Seven Seals“ wear off a little with time because of the frequent repetitions. But that doesn't change anything about the material's quality. Also Johnny Gioeli forms a special attraction by his really unique singing. Who has never heard this man has to catch up on that. “Oceans Of Time“, but also the following albums, offer the perfect opportunity for it. That man is a force and this I claim without wanting to decrease the performances of the other singers of ARP. The disc's production is clean and powerful so the usual level of AXEL RUDI PELL.

“Oceans Of Time“ can in hindsight be qualified as one of the best ARP albums ever, although it for my taste comes second to the highlights “Black Moon Pyramid“ (still with Jeff Scott Soto) and “The Masquerade Ball“. Who likes Melodic Metal with catchy melodies, performed by exceptionally gifted musicians, doesn't get by AXEL RUDI PELL and “Oceans Of Time“
