Since this guide was first printed in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1997, in the context of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons, there has been an increasing emphasis globally on the need for ob placement services to pay specific attention to job-seekers with disabilities and to ensure that job placement personnel are adequately equipped to provide an effective service to this group of service users. The International Labour Office has received requests for technical advice and support, not only from countries of the Asian and Pacific Region, but also other regions of the world. In response to these requests, the guide has been translated into different national languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Khmer, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese and customized to reflect the situation of people with disabilities in different regions. This practical guide is part of the ILO’s strategy to promote the observance of the ILO Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Disabled Persons) Convention, 1983 (No. 159), and Recommendation, 1983 (No. 168) and complement other ILO publications like the Code of Practice on Managing Disability in the Workplace.
