More Pierre Pellegrin, "Aristotle's Classification of Animals: Biology and Conceptual Unity of the Aristotelian Corpus" Originally this work was intended to be a short article on Aristotle's animal taxonomy. Sharing common prejudices, I expected to deal with the problem quickly, having noted some dark areas left by Aristotle in his construction of a "natural" classification of living things. But my research grew by negating the assumptions upon which it was originally based; I was seduced, in both the etymological and popular senses of the word, by the new horizons I discovered. Without the encouragement and help of several of my teachers, this work could not have been completed. It is not only for the sake of academic politeness that I must thank especially Pierre Aubenque, Georges Canguilhem, Jean-Toussaint De-santi, and Pierre Hadot. For making the English edition possible, I thank all my American and British colleagues who have passed along their friendly criticisms of the French edition. I thank especially David Balme, who gracefully accepted several criticisms I had directed toward some of his older writings, and Alan Gotthelf, for his effective assistance in bringing this work to the attention of the University of California Press and for his many helpful comments.
