Gray , Architecture of Modern Mathematics: Essays in History and Philosophy This volume, aimed at both students and researchers in philosophy, mathematics and history of science, highlights leading developments in the overlapping areas of philosophy and the history of modern mathematics. It is a coherent, wide ranging account of how a number of topics in the philosophy of mathematics must be reconsidered in the light of the latest historical research and how a number of historical accounts can be deepened by embracing philosophical questions. The history of modernmathematics provides opportunity for realizing that many pivotal mathematical contributions (especially in the period 1870–1930) were not philosophically neutral. Great mathematicians such as Gauss, Riemann, Kronecker, Dedekind, Hilbert, Poincaré, Brouwer or Weyl (to name but a few) have concerned themselves with eminently philosophical questions in the course of their research.Thus, an adequate historical understanding of modern mathematics calls for the consideration of philosophical issues both in the mathematics itself and in the writing of its history.
