This book is packed with essential information you will need to run a nonprofit. The NOLO name is highly respected for resources of this sort. I have found all of their material to be of high quality. It is very well organized, with short chapters and sample text for documents. It includes state by state section as well. Written at a very basic level the authors explain not only what needs to be done but why it needs to be done and how to go about it. So many small non-profits don't follow the laws well and when a problem comes up find themselves with multiple legal problems. This book helps prevent most of those most common situations. If you are looking for a book about various legal aspects of the nonprofit world then this is not the book for you. The niche that this book fills is providing the instructions and paperwork for common tasks that are of a recurring nature. These include things like how to call a meeting so that it meets legal requirements, how to get a board of directors member proxy on a vote, things to consider when writing or amending by-laws, how to find competent legal counsel, and the myriad other day-to-day things of operating a nonprofit. I have personally been involved with many nonprofits over the years and can say that doing these things the way they should be done left from the beginning is critical. If they are not done left then resolutions can be overturned, officers removed, and individuals sued. But anyone who is running or considering starting a nonprofit organization needs this book.Summary: Great resource - not laden with legalese...phew!Rating: 5This book is well-laid out, starting with Housekeeping 101 as the first chapter, and ends with guidelines as a jumping off point (how to find a good tax advisor or lawyer). The appendixes are a great resource, as they give you tips on how to use the enclosed CD, contact information per state, and forms for the meetings and minutes. What especially drew me to this book were 2 things: 1. It is written by an attorney, but the reader doesn't get mired down with all the legalese that could be there. The format is easy to read, and also easy to implement with the CD of forms. 2. The book has been put out by NOLO, a great resource that I have used in the past. I first found them from a web search when I was hunting down appropriate paperwork to hire independent contractors. NOLO's mission got me: "Make the law as simple as possible, saving you time, money and headaches." That mission statement embodies what this book is about. This book is essential reading regarding how to stay on the good side of the IRS when running a non-profit.
