A singular act.

It will take your breath away.

This is Anouar's 2nd album. It came around a year after Barzakh, his amazing debut. In Conte de l'incroyable Amour, Anouar Brahem seems to push his meditative facet even further. In fact, it would be correct to say that this album is an expansion upon Barzakh; an exploration in the geographical and thematical areas of the oeuvre.

By now, Anouar has acquired a taste for using space as an instrument. However, Conte de l'Incroyable Amour uses this technique to perfection. Never has silence being used in such an insightful manner, except perhaps in Lullaby for the Moon (a Japanese folklore album - a masterpiece).

C.D.L.A features 12 tracks. These amount to 59 minutes approx.

In Barzakh, Brahem favored a trio formation. In C.D.L.A he plays alongside 3 other players, thus a 4-player formation.

Percussionist Lassad Hosni, from the previous album, makes a second apparition. We then have Barbaros Erkose on the clarinet and Kudsi Erguner on the nai flute. Once again, all tracks are written and composed by Anouar except for 2; these being Hayzak and Peshrev Hidjaz Homayoun who were respectively written by Kudsi Erguner and Veli Dede.

Etincelles is a duo between oud and clarinet. Here, breaking from his conventional method, Anouar provides a backdrop for Erkose's clarinet. The sound is close to what would become Astrakan Cafe, 8 years later.

Erkose's clarinet is like a giant ondulating theater curtain caught in a gust of wind. It is magical. Ranging from a soft murmur to a full bodied exclamation, you can feel the sound penetrating through your body.

The 3 following tracks are Barzakh-esque in tone. But here, they are less punctuated and more reflective. These tracks contain a feeling of warmth that is almost dreamlike. The plucked notes emerge from rivers of resonant strings, silences hold heat and calculated restraint, fizzy rhythms are pulled from god-knows-where and carried out with incredible dexterity.

All this is done in an absolute tranquil manner. It is beyond words. Pure meditation.

Conte de l'incroyable Amour is just as the title suggests: "A Tale of Incredible Love" - A 10 minute ride through gorgeousness where the oud and clarinet are wed in an almost erotic manner.

Peshrev Hidjaz Homayoun and Diversion are unique tracks on the album because they feature Kudsi Erguner's nai flute. This really makes them stand out. These 2 tracks were not composed by Anouar Brahem but are neverless masterful. The nai flute shimmers and wails it's way into your heart. From a distance, without intellectualising things, these tracks remind me of my childhood fascination with adventure and hidden treasure; they have that kind of inexplicable aura.

Nayrak is outstanding. Lassad Hosni goes for simplicity and sets the clarinet and oud on a pulsating rhythm. Erkose's clarinet takes on a jazzy freestyle that concludes Nayrak nicely. Great track.

Battements is a trademark Brahem style: a kind of constant flow of oud with plucked sections and intelligent structure, all this at an unbelievable speed.

En souvenir d'Iram and Iram Retrouvee are further explorations of nostalgia and meditative beauty such as tracks 2,3 and 4 (as described in the 5th paragraph).

The last track is a six minute reprise of Conte de l'Incroyable Amour, leaving on that charismatic melody. This time around, it is done as a solo by Anouar Brahem. Blissful.

C.D.L.A is an outstanding and unique recording, just as Barzakh was a ground-breaking title. You should experience the other 5 albums by Anouar Brahem (this is without including Barzakh and C.D.L.A). This is music that reaches places that most folklore can't. Nothing compares.
