More Um ihre Eltern finanziell zu unterstützen, nimmt die junge Pfarrerstochter Agnes eine Stelle als Gouvernante an. Bald schon gerät sie zwischen die Fronten von Dienerschaft, verzogenen Kindern und allzu nachgiebigen Eltern. Sensibel und eindrücklich erzählt Anne Bronte die Geschichte eines Mädchens, das lernt, über sich hinauszuwachsen.Anne Bront? (1820-1849) stand als Autorin lange Jahre im Schatten ihrer älteren Schwestern Emily und Charlotte, obwohl sie nicht minder talentiert war, wie dieser Roman beweist. Auf eigenen Erfahrungen aufbauend, erzählt sie in «Agnes Grey» die Geschichte einer jungen Hauslehrerin, die mit den verwöhnten Sprößlingen und den alles verzeihenden Eltern ihre liebe Not hat. Bald schon entpuppen sich Agnes' idealistische Vorsätze als «dichte Traumbilder, die mit den bloßen Pflichten einer Gouvernante wenig oder gar nichts zu tun» haben. Dennoch ist sie keineswegs die verkannte Seele, die inmitten viktorianischer Interieurs ihr Schattendasein fristet. Sie präsentiert sich dem Leser als eine durchaus willensstarke junge Frau, in der uns die Persönlichkeit Anne Brontes eindrücklich entgegentritt.
