Angel Romero: Virtuoso

Angel Romero has been one of the world’s leading Spanish classical guitarists over the last 40 years, and this short but sweet DVD of a set at the Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, CA back in 1981 is proof positive of the immense talents of this musician. Fans of the legenday Andres Segovia will no doubt be instantly attracted to the flawless technique and emotional fire that Romero displays.

From blazing classical runs, to wild two-hand tapping on “Suite Andalucia”, to the gorgeous flamenco picking heard throughout “Recuerdos de la Alhambra”, Romero pulls in a virtuoso performance. The two improvisations are so mind blowing, they are worth the price of admission alone.Guitar players, and especially those into classical & flamenco styles, will love this DVD, and wish that there was more here to enjoy. That’s probably the only drawback-the DVD is just under 30 minutes, and the only extras you get are a biography and discography. Still, 30 minutes of gorgeous and scintillating Spanish guitar, by a true master of the instrument, is good enough for me.
