This the story of a poet : the often quoted poems belong to Tarkovsky's own father , the poet Aleksey Alexei Tarkovsky. He constantly slips quite usually between conscious and subconscious experiences. The film is an essay in the transformation of the abstract impulses and influences on the artists development and creation into a symbolic and visual lexicon. Within the reciprocal impact between the past and the present, the artist is a kind of conscience-ridden Alice in a mist-shrouded, modernist wonderland. Tarkovsky's mystical self-portrait makes his aesthetic and philosophical position crystal clear : He is a romantic sensibility that places the personal pain and struggle at the centre of universal and spiritual forces. This is my favorite Tarkovsky movie. It is also the best movie ever made on earth in my (humble) opinion. I rate it as 11 points out of 10.
