Dealing not only within the context of individual withdrawal into the anchorhold itself, these essays also examine the wider effect enclosure had upon other established communities and the laity. Theories and practices of enclosure and the physical and metaphorical implications enclosure presented for its adherents and their contemporaries are addressed. The role played by gender in the various and shifting manifestations of enclosure, which lasted throughout the Middle Ages, is also examined.
