More Gr¨¦goire Allaire ¡°Analyse num¨¦rique et optimisation : Une introduction ¨¤ la mod¨¦lisation math¨¦matique et ¨¤ la simulation num¨¦rique" Pr¨¦sentation de l'¨¦diteur Ce livre est issu d'un cours enseign¨¦ ¨¤ l'¨¦cole Polytechnique dont l'objectif, au del¨¤ de la pr¨¦sentation de l'analyse num¨¦rique et de l'optimisation, est d'introduire les ¨¦tudiants au monde de la mod¨¦lisation math¨¦matique et de la simulation num¨¦rique. La mod¨¦lisation et la simulation ont pris une importance consid¨¦rable ces derni¨¨res d¨¦cennies dans tous les domaines de la science et des applications industrielles (ou sciences de l'ing¨¦nieur). En effet, depuis leur apparition au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale les ordinateurs ont profond¨¦ment transform¨¦ les math¨¦matiques en en faisant une science exp¨¦rimentale : on fait des " exp¨¦riences num¨¦riques " (des calculs sur ordinateurs) comme d'autres font des exp¨¦riences physiques. L'analyse num¨¦rique est justement la discipline qui con?oit et analyse les m¨¦thodes ou algorithmes de calcul. La simulation num¨¦rique permet aux math¨¦maticiens de s'attaquer ¨¤ des probl¨¨mes beaucoup plus complexes et concrets qu'auparavant, issus de motivations imm¨¦diates industrielles ou scientifiques, auxquels on peut apporter des r¨¦ponses ¨¤ la fois qualitatives mais aussi quantitatives : c'est la mod¨¦lisation math¨¦matique. Remarquons qu'¨¤ cot¨¦ des champs d'applications traditionnels que sont la chimie, le m¨¦canique et la physique se sont ouverts de nouvelles perspectives en biologie, environnement, finance, m¨¦decine et sciences sociales. Par ailleurs, l'ing¨¦nieur ou le scientifique qui a r¨¦ussi ¨¤ simuler num¨¦riquement son probl¨¨me ne s'arr¨ºte pas en si bon chemin : il veut ensuite pouvoir intervenir sur certains param¨¨tres pour am¨¦liorer ou optimiser le fonctionnement, le rendement, ou la r¨¦ponse d'un syst¨¨me en maximisant (ou minimisant) des fonctions associ¨¦es. C'est pr¨¦cis¨¦ment le but de l'optimisation qui fournit des outils th¨¦oriques ou num¨¦riques pour ce faire. L'analyse num¨¦rique et l'optimisation sont donc deux outils essentiels et compl¨¦mentaires de la mod¨¦lisation math¨¦matique. Des travaux pratiques de simulation num¨¦rique ¨¤ l'aide des logiciels Scilab et FreeFem accompagnent cet ouvrage et sont disponibles sur le site web http://www.cmap.polytechnique.fr/-allaire.
