In the musical landscape of the sixteenth century there was little place for 'Dutch' composers in the strict sense of the word. [...] Due to the favourable cultural and economic climate the region developed into a breeding ground for renaissance polyphony. [...] On this CD, the step from the past to the present is a small one.

The Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet was founded in 1978 when its four recorder players (Daniël Brüggen, Bertho Driever, Paul Leenhouts, Karel van Steenhoven) were studying with Kees Boeke and Walter van Hauwe at the Sweelinck Academy of Music in Amsterdam. Their main goal was to develop a sound idiom and repertoire for recorder quartet.

In the summer of 1981, the quartet won the Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges. Since then the ensemble has become internationally renowned and toured Europe, the United States, Australia and Japan. Their recorded output has done much to revive interest in their instrument and its repertoire. Their CDs Virtuoso Recorder Music and Baroque Recorder Music won Edison Awards.

The quartet's unconventional approach to the recorder and their tight ensemble playing have inspired many contemporary composers. Tristan Keuris, Chiel Meyering, Peter Jan Wagemans and Daan Manneke are among those who have dedicated compositions to the quartet. In addition to contemporary work the group's repertoire includes renaissance and baroque music, which they perform using an extensive array of instruments, copies of historic originals and newly-developed models made for them by instrument makers all over the world.

Apart from concert performances, the quartet holds workshops and master classes on ancient and contemporary recorder music. They are also editing a sheet music series for Moeck-Verlag.
