Honey Bowl is the latest release from St. Louis based, Alvin Jett & the Phat Noiz Blues Band who have honed a fresh, contemporary blues sound spiced up with touches of jazz and funk. Tight ensemble playing can be heard throughout the band's latest release. Drummer Corey Woodruff and bassist Matt Lauer know how to keep a solid groove, and both guitarist Alvin Jett and sax-man Frank Bauer are strong soloists.

The Phat Noiz Blues Band tends to favor tight, busy, arrangements; Jett and Bauer excel at soloing aggressively over the funky rhythm section. Tracks like "Blues Man's Hat" and "Three Minute Man" showcase the band's talent for writing and delivering tongue-in-cheek lyrics. As strong as this band is with up-tempo material, some of their strongest performances occur when they shift into a lower gear.

"The Wreck," written and sung by bassist Matt Davis, is a gut-wrenching tale of love gone bad. The soul-baring lyrics and delicate arrangement are reminiscent of Robert Cray or Joe Louis Walker. A restrained, jazzy solo from Jett compliments Davis' heartfelt vocals. "Lucky Charms," a mellow, soulful instrumental, is another one of the disc's highpoints. A stately, melodic chord progression gives Bauer and Jett plenty of room to stretch out; Jett's playing on this tune sounds strongly influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan's softer side.

Honey Bowl should be a satisfying listen for fans of polished, modern blues. Whether churning out up-tempo funk or exploring their more contemplative side, the Phat Noiz Blues Band's songwriting and instrumental chops are top-notch.
