Les danses présentées ici proviennent de divers manuscrits d'origine italienne, et sont presque toutes attribuées à Domenico da Piacenza et Guglielmo Ebrea da Pesaro, maîtres italiens du XVe siècle. De l'aveu même des interprètes, toute exécution de cette musique est personnelle et ne peut pas être considérée comme définitive et absolue. Il s'agit en premier lieu de rendre les morceaux dansables, car c'est là leur destination première; puis de les adapter aux ensembles choisis.

La démarche est subjective, mais il faut bien avouer que le résultat est fort convaincant. S'éloignant de tout dogme ou de toute considération scolastique pure, les interprètes ont choisi de restituer cette musique de manière plaisante, simple, dansante, sans excès de fioritures, avec des combinaisons instrumentales fort agréables, voire inhabituelles et très belles – l'usage des cuivres mélodiques est fort bien venu.

Fondé en 1993, l'ensemble de musique médiévale "Les haulz et les bas" joue uniquement sur instruments à vent (avec vielle, luth et tambourin pour la basse) et s'est acquis une grande réputation européenne.

Un disque pour les hédonistes musicaux qui veulent se replonger cinq cents ans en arrière. (abeillemusique.com)
