Viele der Aufnahmen erleben hier ihre weltweite CD-Premiere. Mangelsdorff war eine Jazz-Personlichkeit von internationalem Renommee und historischer Bedeutung weit uber das Genre hinaus. Mit seinem musikalischen Weg von swingendem Modern Jazz hin zu freier Improvisation beeinflusste er das Jazz-Verstandnis einer ganzen Generation. Der mit dem Bundesverdienstkreuz, mehreren Deutschen Schallplattenpreisen und Spitzenplatzierungen in allen internationalen Jazz-Magazinen ausgezeichnete Musiker gilt als der vielleicht wichtigste Innovator des Posaunenspiels des 20.
