More Alan Roland, Psychoanalysis, Creativity, and Literature: A French-American Inquiry To consider French and American psychoanalysis seriously is not simply to discuss, compare, and argue comparative theories—as has been done for years with the work of Melanie Klein. Rather, we must consider the total gestalt of each movement in its respective country: the place of psychoanalysis in its sociocultural context; the institutionalization of psychoanalysis, including who is allowed to be trained; the relation of psychoanalysis to other intellectual disciplines; and the theoretical thrusts and concerns. What further emerges is an interrelationship of psychoanalysis to literary and philosophical concerns from both sides of the Atlantic. It is hoped that this book not only makes French psychoanalysis more readily accessible; but in a broader context helps build another bridge between psychoanalysis and the humanities—part of Freud's original vision of psychoanalysis. | | | |
