More

In March 1991 the Fifth Conference on Social Aspects of AIDS took place at South

Bank Polytechnic in London. As in previous years, the conference attracted social

researchers working in the field of health, as well as health providers in statutory and

non-governmental organizations. Themes examined included perceptions of risk and

risk-taking behaviour, rights and responsibilities, and the ‘rationality’ that underpins

individual and collective responses to HIV/AIDS.

This book, like its predecessors (Social Aspects of AIDS, Falmer Press, 1988; AIDS:

Social Representations and Social Practices, Falmer Press, 1989; AIDS: Individual, Cultural

and Policy Dimensions, Falmer Press, 1990; and AIDS: Responses, Interventions and Care,

Falmer Press, 1991), contains many of the papers given at the conference.

Collectively, they demonstrate the important work that is currently underway as well

as the scope of contemporary enquiry.

As editors, it has been again our privilege to work with contributors both before

and after the conference. Our thanks go to Paul Broderick, Theo Blackmore, Phillip

Gatter, Andrew Hunt, Ford Hickson, Heather Jones, Vijay Kumari, Michael Stephens

and Peter Weatherburn for pre-conference publicity and conference administration.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) provided financial support for

the meeting. Finally, we must thank Sue Graham and Helen Thomas who prepared

the manuscript for publication.
