Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (1486-1535) is widely regarded as the most influential writer of Renaissance esoterica. His work, De Occulta Philosophia, appeared in three books. Written from 1509 to 1510 (he would have been 23 at the time), it circulated widely in manuscript form, and was eventually printed in 1531. It is a systematic exposition of the occult, in the sense of hidden, knowledge extant in Europe. It is an encyclopedic work of Renaissance magic providing information on such diverse topics as planetary rulerships, occult virtues, sympathies and enmities of natural things, enchantments, sorceries, types of divination, the scales of numbers and their significance, astrological talismans, the divine Trinity, the Kabbalistic Names of God and the orders of evil spirits.The so-called Fourth Book appeared in Latin some thirty years after Agrippa's death. Johann Weyer, a student of Agrippa's in his Praestigiis Daemonum, denounced this work to be spurious, and that evaluation has rarely been questioned.Download:
