Autor: Edd Applegate, "Advocacy Journalists: A Biographical Dictionary of Writers and Editors."

LYMAN ABBOTT, JOURNALIST AND CLERGYMAN, was born on December 18, 1835, in Roxbury, Massachusetts, to Harriet Vaughan Abbott and Jacob Abbott. Although he moved with his family to Farmington, Maine, his mother died several years later, when he was seven. His father moved to New York City primarily to manage a school, but Abbott remained in Farmington, where he was raised and educated by relatives. When Abbott was in his teens, his father encouraged him to open a business or continue his education. Abbott enrolled at New York University, from which he received his bachelor’s degree in 1853. After learning about law, he accepted a position at a firm that had been founded by his older brothers, Austin and Vaughn.
