Adolf Hitler: A Biographical Companion

by David Nicholls Introduction Studying Adolf Hitler raises peculiar problems. Writing about a man responsible for such overwhelming evil inevitably has a moral as well as a normal historical or philosophical dimension. Hitler turned his crazy pipe dreams into the deaths of millions of people and a living nightmare for millions more. Should we even attempt to explain him? And if we do, is there not a danger of personalizing evil, easily placing the blame on the peculiarities of one individual when in reality, responsibility was more broadly spread? What of those who supported him, kept silent, or remained indifferent? Can Hitler be held responsible for the moral shortcomings or the mere human limitations of so many others, especially those who felt genuinely powerless in the face of Nazi tyranny? Raising these very questions provides one good reason for studying Hitler: he forces us to ask questions about ourselves. But for many people any attempt to explain Hitler is in itself obscene. The endeavor to get at the roots of Hitlers psychology and worldview risks the creation of a Hitler without victims,?while at the same time to ascribe any real meaning to his actions is to play his own game. The only people for whom the Holocaust had a purpose were the Nazis. And referring to the Holocaust, the historian Eberhard Jckel writes: The rational power of language becomes paralyzed in the face of that event? But to attempt historical explanation is not to ascribe a higher meaning or purpose, certainly not to the actions of Hitler. It is both historically and humanly necessary to come to terms with Hitler and his career of destruction. Book Description The story of Hitler's rise to power as leader of Germany, the destruction of democracy and civilized values in a great nation, together with World War II, for which he bears the principal responsibility, provide a painful historical lesson. The Hitler regime warns us of the destruction that ensues when a perverted ideology and a cult of leadership are combined with a polity where power is divorced from morality.
