Before this Verve reissue, "People in Me" was long considered a lost masterpiece from Abbey Lincoln's middle period. Recorded and released in Japan in 1973, at a time when Jazz artists like Lincoln were sadly neglected in this country, the selections showcase Lincoln's tremendous talents as a songwriter (she wrote or co-wrote all the eight tracks). Her friend, Miles Davis, who was performing in town at the time, helped out by lending her three members of his band for the one-night session. The feel of this album is very joyous and Lincoln's vocal performances, in her unique drawling style, are truly inspired. The album's centerpiece is a seven-minute-plus version of John Coltrane's tune "Africa" to which Lincoln added lyrics. The track is a rhythmical tour de force with Lincoln's electrifying vocals literally disintegrating into wild roars at the end and set against James Mtume's ferocious conga drumming. Other stand-out tracks include the lovely and touching "Dorian (The Man With The Magic)," and the socially conscious title cut which she later re-recorded on her best-selling "Devil's Got Your Tongue" album. This is certainly one of the enigmatic Abbey Lincoln's finest recordings.
