With the A-4 Skyhawk, Edward Heinemann and his design team proved that bigger and more sophisticated was not necessarily better when it came to designing combat aircraft. At about the same time that the Douglas Aircraft Company was also designing the largest carrier-based aircraft ever built up to that time in the form of the A-3 Skywarrior, Ed Heinemann proved that small and simple were still qualities that could be used effectively in designing what was to become one of the most successful aircraft ever produced. Having been contracted for in June 21, 1952, and first flown two years later, the Sky-hawk has enjoyed an operational service life that has now exceeded thirty-five years.
