本书从李鸿章的早年落拓，写到他参加镇压太平军、甲午海战，创办洋务运动，周旋于世界外交舞台直至死去的一生。作者把李鸿章同古今中外要人霍光、诸葛亮，秦桧，曾国藩、张之洞、俾斯麦、伊藤博文等做了对比，指出李鸿章也有鞠躬尽瘁死而后已的心，能够忍辱负重，但是他没有长远的眼光，不知道为后世立百年大计，仅满足于修修补补。总之他的失败也就是晚清政府的失败，是晚清政府不了解世界大势，不懂得民主政治的必然结局。
