《西铭》原名《订顽》，为《正蒙乾称篇》中的一部分，张载曾将其录于学堂双牖的右侧，题为《订顽》，后程颐将《订顽》改称为《西铭》，才有此独立之篇名。
此篇之核心思想在于：以乾坤，天地，和父母（含男女，夫妇及家庭）为一体，以乾坤确立起感通之德能，阐明此德能如何从个体之身位向家庭或家政展开，并推达到天下。隐而不显的是“气之本体”感发的思想，是气之感通性贯穿其间，如果离开了“气”的贯通和感通性的话题，是不会有文本语句之层层展开的。这也与张载本人的“气本论”是相通，而乾坤之说源于《易经》，与阴阳之气的理论也相关。 此篇虽“大抵皆古人说话集来”（《朱子语类》卷九十八），但全部由儒家典籍中引证事例。可以把它分为两个部分：前一部分为思想之发挥，后一部分是具体之事例的列举。观其文字，确实大抵“皆”是对儒家四书五经的字句的采撷，这恰好反映了那个时代以及张子本人写作方式的特点
