在人的记忆中，遗憾的是会遇到许许多多敌人，它们虽然缓慢但又确确实实在消磨人的记忆。无情的时间就是这样的敌人之一，它使人们把往日生活中许多有趣味、有教益的事一点一点地抛在脑后。有时，新的事件和新的印象会不知不觉地迫使我们按另一种方式去思索经历过的事情，于是，在久已流逝的岁月中所发生的事件，就会突然使我们感到它们有些面目皆非了。很多类似的危险在等待着回忆录作者。我了解这点，不相信自己的记性，所以我在着手写回忆录时，研究了现存的文献，遍访了各次事件的积极参加者。我写的是伟大卫国战争的事。这次战争将永远在我们这一代人乃至我们的后代中引起无穷的兴趣。在有史以来最激烈、流血最多的这次武装冲突中，世界上第一个社会主义国家的坚不可摧，苏维埃人伟大的爱国主义和我国各族人民牢不可破的友谊，特别鲜明地显示出来了。
