是以中医学理论为指导，研究人体内脏疾病，并采用传统中医药治疗方法为主的一门临床学科。它有较系统的辨证论治理论体系，是临床各学科的基础。
本书主要介绍了的基础理论、常见内科病证的基本知识及其辨证论治规律。全书分总论和各论两部分。总论主要叙述了内科疾病的分类和病证特点，辨证论治的步骤与基本要求，以及中医内科疾病的治疗原则和常用治法等内容。各论按中医理论，分为肺系病证、心系病证、气血津液病证、全身与肢体病证及其他病证八章，分别介绍了临床常见的47种病证的基本概念、主要病因病机、诊断要点和辨证分型治疗及其他治疗方法。其他治疗方法主要介绍常用中成药、单方验方和各种外治疗法。有关针灸、推拿和养生康复方面的知识由于另有专册介绍，在此不再赘述。
