发鸠之山,其上多柘木。有鸟焉,其状如乌;文首、白喙、赤足,名曰精卫,其鸣自。是炎帝之少女,名曰女娃。女娃游于东海,溺而不返,故为精卫。常衔西山之木石,以堙于东海。
———精卫填海《山海经·北山经》 晋代著名诗人陶渊明有诗云:“精卫衔微木,将以填沧海。”句中典故乃是一个凄美动人的故事。故事的主人公女娃,是炎帝即神农氏的小女儿,有一次她乘船到东海游玩,不幸船被海浪打翻,她溺水而死,死后化为一只小鸟,虽然形状很像乌鸦,但头上有美丽的花纹,并且是白色的嘴,红色的脚,人们叫她精卫。就是这样一只单薄瘦弱的小鸟却常常从西山衔来木石,发誓要填平东海。一只小鸟要填平茫茫东海,看起来相当荒诞无稽,幼稚可笑,却能使人瞬间体验到人同大自然抗争的那种苍凉悲壮。精卫成为不向自然屈服,不断征服自然,顽强到底的精神象征,从而具有了永恒的艺术价值。 这则神话出于《山海经·北山经》。《山海经》仅仅31000多字,却是一部涵盖古代地理学、方志学、动物学、植物学、天文学、药物学、社会学、历史学、人文学、民族学、神话学和巫术学等集大成的旷世奇书。它文字简洁、内容丰富、整体有序、结构严谨,共18卷,分《山经》五篇,《海经》十三篇(《海外经》四篇,《海内经》五篇,《大荒经》四篇),成书于战国初至汉代初年。关于它的作者,学界有不同的争论,有些古籍记载,认为《山海经》是夏禹、伯益所作,其实没有那么早,大部分成于战国时期的楚地,《海内经》部分成于西汉。《山海经》是我国古代一部地理著作,它在文学史上的特殊价值,主要是保存了我国远古时代丰富的神话传说。《山海经》的文学价值主要在于它是我国古代收集神话最多的典籍,据统计全书记叙神和神话故事400多个,内容十分丰富。
