故事是以董昕、程真夫妇及其养女程功一家三口为主要人物之间的感情而展开的。
董昕是位建筑师，程真是位新闻女记者，程功在加国留学，读建筑系，常到董昕与汤姆合伙经营的建筑公司里去帮忙、学习，程功年轻貌美，口齿伶俐，讨人喜欢。程真为挽回与董昕的这段婚姻，放弃了自己心爱的记者职业移民到加国，一家团聚。董昕误认程功对他有爱意，冒言向程真提出离婚，程真听后十分震惊，怎么养女会与董昕结婚呢？在此时间，孙毓川的出现使程真陷于梦境中，产生多种幻觉。最后，董、程这段婚姻终告失败。 是程真倔强的性格，控制了命运，她可以预言每段关系的结局。 他们最终都会铁青着面孔问：“你到底要家庭还是要自由？” 自由、自由、自由。 已经走了这么远，不愿回头。
