在英国留学的乔景仰英籍中年教授纳梵的学识和人品，深深的爱上了他。毕业后，乔回到香港，由于思念日甚，乔无心工作，重返英国后，做了纳梵的情妇。然而社会的压力，人与人沟通的困难和许多莫名而琐碎的原因，终于磨掉了这份真爱。这其中，乔同其母为其挑选的男朋友家明成为了好朋友，并最终嫁给了家明。家明是一个极其优秀的男子，可是，应该幸福的乔的心情却是惘惘……
《人淡如菊》另一个写得极出色的地方，就是乔和纳梵由相爱到分手的历程。教人不由得感叹，这样“山无楞，天地合，乃敢与君绝”的爱情，终究也会随风而逝。而最触目惊心的，是居然还消逝地悄无声息，所谓“无疾而终”吧。当然，真的要说没有一点原因，是不可能的，只是感情没有被摧毁在什么惊天动地的障碍里面，而是消磨在了平日生活的点点滴滴小事上，更显得无奈，也更防不胜防。仔细想想，谁都有错，又谁都没有大错，可是，就是没有办法相爱了，这才悲哀。通常碰到什么没有做好的事情，我们总是说“如果可以重新来过，我一定……”，可是，这里的无奈是让你颓然到自觉的相信：重新来过，结局也不会更好。很灰色，可也很不幸地似乎可以在现实生活里印证。 “忽然有一天在阳光下，我在花园散步，我不后悔与比尔纳梵在一起的两年了。那是一次恋爱，真的恋爱。而现在，我是幸福的，我似乎应该是一个毫无怨言的人。
