张机，字仲景，河南南阳人，曾做过长沙太守。他睿智而贤德，十分体恤百姓疾苦。眼见患病的人日益增多，他便在繁忙的公事中抽出时间，每月的初一和十五都坐在大堂上给百姓治病，分文不取，这也就是“坐堂”一词的由来。但他能救的人毕竟是少数，为了解决当时的医者对病证认识不清、误治错治的情况，便动手著述了《伤寒杂病论》一书，以纠正世医在治疗上的偏颇之处，毫不留私，倾囊相告，只为拯救更多的生灵。
