为了回答我们为什么需要学，我们首先需要回答为什么要学习制造。毕竟，人们经常听到说美国正在转向服务型经济，因而制造部门所占的比重将日趋缩小。从表面上看这种说法似乎是正确的：在20世纪50年代，制造业从业人员占整个社会劳动人口的50%，但是到了1985年这个比例就下降到20%左右。
