W okresie drugiej wojny światowej armia niemiecka używała do transportu oraz na polu walki obok klasycznych pojazdów kołowych także pojazdów półgasienicowych. Najbardziej popularne były transportery opancerzone typu Sd Kfz 250 i Sd Kfz 251, które były używane do wielu zadań: rozpoznania, wsparcia ogniowego, jako pojazdy saperskie, sanitarne, obrony przeciwlotniczej.

Niemcy wprowadzili też do uzbrojenia wiele pojazdów półgasienicowych powstałych w wyniku przebudowy standardowych podwozi samochodów ciężarowych.

Pierwsze prace nad modyfikacją i przystosowaniem samochodów ciężarowych do podwozia półgqsienicowego wykonano w 1939 roku. lecz w tym czasie nie rozpoczęto konkretnych prac. Blitzkrieg nie wymagał pojazdów zdolnych do jazdy terenowej i na drogach nieutwardzonych. Dopiero wojna z Rosjq Sowieckq zmieniła poglqd na tę sprawę. Planowano przebudowanie standardowych samochodów ciężarowych o ładowności 3000 i 4500 kg budowanych przez niemiecki przemysł motoryzacyjny.
